a major English joint-stock bank that until 1968 was fourth among the “Big Five” of British banking. Established in London in 1833, it absorbed numerous other banks; some of the largest of these included Union of London and Smiths Bank (1918), Coutts and Company (1920), the Isle of Man Bank (1961), and the District Bank (1962).
