Kiev Museum of Russian Art

one of the largest collections of Russian art in the USSR, including paintings, sculpture, and graphic and applied art, reflecting the principal stages of its development since the 13th century.

The museum was founded in 1922 as the Kiev Picture Gallery, and between 1934 and 1936 it was the division of Russian art of the Art Museum. The section devoted to old Russian art has icons dating from the 13th to the 17th century, and the 18th-century art collection includes important works by I. P. Argunov, D. G. Levitskii, V. L. Borovikovskii, and F. F. Shchedrin. The section devoted to the art of the first half of the 19th century includes works by V. A. Tropinin and P. A. Fedotov, and the division of art of the second half of the 19th century contains works by N. N. Ge, I. I. Shishkin, I. N. Kramskoi, M. M. Antokol’skii, V. V. Vereshchagin, V. D. Polenov, I. E. Repin, and N. Ia. Iaroshenko. The art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries is represented by works of M. A. Vrubel’, K. A. Korovin, M. V. Nesterov, and P. P. Trubetskoi. The Soviet art collection includes works by S. V. Gerasimov, V. I. Mukhina, B. V. Ioganson, A. A. Plastov, A. A. Deineka, and S. A. Chuikov. In the division of applied arts are porcelain objects dating from the 18th to the 20th century, as well as works by the masters of Palekh and Khokhloma.
