Lebedev, Dmitrii Nikolaevich

 

Born Aug. 23 (Sept. 4), 1840; died July 6 (18), 1880. Russian scientist in the field of railroad mechanics. Graduating from Moscow University in 1860, he became a professor at the Moscow Technical School in 1865 and at Moscow University in 1869. Lebedev’s major works were concerned with the dynamics of steam locomotives. In his master’s thesis (1867), which was the first Russian work on the vibration theory of suspended (sprung) parts in a steam locomotive, he established a number of theorems of practical importance. He determined the various types of vibrations in a locomotive and indicated ways to improve locomotive stability.
