Lebedin Cattle

a dairy-and-beef cattle breed developed in kolkhozes and sovkhozes in Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR (named after the city of Lebedin, the capital of Sumy Oblast), by crossing gray Ukrainian cattle with Schwyz cattle and subsequently inbreeding the best crossbreds. The breed was confirmed in 1950. Lebedin cattle have well-proportioned bodies with well-formed meaty shapes. The color is principally gray-brown, with darker coloration on the front part of the body and sides. The milk yield of cows is 3,000–3,700 kg per lactation; on pedigree farms it is 5,000–6,000 kg. The record milk yield was 12,300 kg. The fat content of the milk is 3.8–3.9 percent. Bulls weigh 850–1,000 kg; cows, 500–550 kg. The animals mature early. The young weigh 380–420 kg by 18 months. The dressing percentage is 55–58 percent. The breed is raised in Sumy, Kharkov, and Chernigov oblasts.
