Maltsev, Anatolii

Born Nov. 14 (27), 1909, in what is now the settlement of Misheronskii, Shatura Raion, Moscow Oblast; died July 7, 1967, in Novosibirsk. Soviet mathematician. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1958; corresponding member, 1953).

Mal’tsev graduated from Moscow State University in 1931. From 1932 to 1960 he worked at the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute (as a professor from 1943), and from 1942 to 1960 at the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Beginning in 1960 he worked at the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and the University of Novosibirsk.

Mal’tsev’s principal works were devoted to algebra and mathematical logic. He obtained fundamental results in group theory, the theory of rings and linear algebras, topological algebra, the theory of groups and Lie algebras, and the theory of algorithms. He was one of the creators of the general theory of algebraic systems and the theory of models, and his local theorems laid the foundation for the systematic application of the methods of mathematical logic in algebra.

Mal’tsev was a deputy to the fourth and fifth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. A recipient of the Lenin Prize (1964) and the State Prize of the USSR (1946), he was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and several medals.
