Modjokerto

 

(Mojokerto), a city in Indonesia, in eastern Java, near the city of Surabaya. Population, 52,000 (1961). An important transportation junction and trading center in the valley of the Brantas River. Modjokerto has food and condiment industry (mainly sugar) and textile industry.

The Dutch scholar G. Koenigswald found the fossil skull of a child two or three years old near Modjokerto in 1936. The skull has primitive features and a small brain case (700 cc). The absolute age of the Modjokerto finding is 700,000 years. Most scholars believe that the child is an early Pithecanthropus.
