Oktemberian

(until 1932, Sardarabad), a city (since 1947) under republic jurisdiction; center of Oktemberian Raion, Armenian SSR. Situated in the Ararat Valley. Railroad station (Oktember) on the Tbilisi-Yerevan line, 43 km west of Yerevan. Population, 28,000 (1974).

Oktemberian has a furniture factory and plants producing machine tools and accessories. The food-processing industry includes a canned-goods plant that also produces fruit and vegetable juices; a brandy distillery; a dairy; and a winery. As of 1974, a glass-container plant was under construction in Oktemberian, and an atomic power plant was being built in the vicinity. Oktemberian has an engineering technicum and an agricultural sovkhoz-technicum.
