Oktiabrskii

a city under republic (ASSR) jurisdiction in the Bashkir ASSR. Located on the right bank of the Ik River (a tributary of the Kama), 24 km southwest of the Tuimazy railroad station. Population, 80,000 (1974).

Oktiabr’skii is a major center of the petroleum industry in the Volga-Ural Oil-Gas Region. It arose in connection with the discovery in 1937 of the Tuimazy petroleum deposit and became a city in 1946. Oktiabr’skii has plants producing oil-field equipment and devices for automation of petroleum enterprises, as well as low-voltage electrical equipment, porcelain and pottery wares, ceramic tiles, and chrome-tanned leather. There are also clothing and footwear factories. The All-Union Scientific Research Institute for Geophysical Studies of Geological Exploratory Wells and the general engineering department of the Ufa Petroleum Institute are located in Oktiabr’skii. There are petroleum and municipal-construction technicums and a music school.
