Malygin
Malygin
an icebreaker in the Soviet Arctic Fleet. The Malygin was built in Great Britain in 1912. Displacement, 1,790 tons; length, 62.2 m; width, 14.2 m. Originally named the Solovei Budimirovich, it was renamed in 1921 in honor of S. G. Malygin. In 1928, the Malygin took part in the search for Umberto Nobile’s Italian expedition; from 1931 to 1939 it was used to conduct hydrological studies in various regions of the Soviet Arctic. An expedition on the Malygin in 1935 affirmed the presence of an archipelago with seven islands in the area of Isachenko Island. In 1937 the Malygin drifted in ice (with the icebreakers Georgii Sedov and Sadko) from the region of Bel’kovskii Island to 83°05’ N lat. and 138°22’ E long., where she was taken out of the ice by the icebreaker Ermak. In 1940 she was decommissioned.
