Nekropol

the name of reference works published in Russia in the 19th and 20th centuries containing information about people buried in various cemeteries. The nekropoli usually included the texts of tombstone inscriptions, including the name and patronymic, dates of birth and death, and rank or title. The most famous nekropoli were V. I. Saitov’s and B. L. Modzalevskii’s Moscow Nekropol’ (vols. 1–3, 1907–08), V. I. Saitov’s St. Petersburg Nekropol’ (vols. 1–4, 1912–13), V. V. Sheremetevskii’s Russian Provincial Nekropol’ (vol. 1, 1914), V. I. Chernopiatov’s Russian Nekropol’ Abroad (no. 1–3, 1908–13), and V. M. Anderson’s Russian Nekropol’ in Foreign Lands (no. 1, Paris and Its Environs, 1915). Similar types of works are published abroad.
