Neledinskii-Meletskii, Iurii Aleksandrovich

 

Born Sept. 6 (17), 1752, in Moscow; died Feb. 13 (25), 1829, in Kaluga. Russian poet of noble descent. Studied at the University of Strasbourg.

Neledinskii-Meletskii is the author of odes, love epistles, epistles to friends, and song lyrics that are characteristic of the poetry of Russian sentimentalism. He contributed to the convergence of folk songs and songs of literary origin; some of his songs enjoyed wide popularity (”I Will Walk Out to My Stream ... “ and “My Sweetheart Sat the Other Night . . . ,” among others).
