(Stenodus leucichthys nelma), a fish of the family Salmonidae. The nelma, a subspecies of the inconnu, is distributed in the basin of the Arctic Ocean from the Ponoi River to the Mackenzie River. It is a semimigratory or freshwater fish. The nelma is up to 1.3 m long and weighs up to 50 kg. The fish spawns in the fall; fecundity is between 125,000 and 420,000 eggs. The roe develop among rocks. The nelma is a predator, feeding on smelt, least cisco, and the fry of whitefishes. It is a valuable fish and is bred commercially.
