Long Strike of 1875

a strike by miners in Pennsylvania (USA). It was provoked by the mineowners in December 1874. Strikebreakers were brought into the mines and a 10-20 percent decrease in pay was announced. As soon as the miners began to fight back, the governor of Pennsylvania immediately sent troops to the strike region. The strike, in which 7,000 miners participated, lasted for seven months. Only hunger and deprivation forced the miners to accept the mineowners’ conditions. Pay was lowered and the miners’ Workingmen’s Benevolent Association was crushed.
