KimryKimrya city in Kalinin Oblast, RSFSR, 133 km east of Kalinin. It is a landing on the left bank of the Volga; the Savelovo railroad station is on the right bank. Population, 57,000 (1972). In 1677, Kimry was a court village (dvortsovoe selo), under the administration of the prikaz (office) of the Great Palace. It subsequently belonged to the Russian gentry families—the Saltykovs, Golovkins, and Skavronskiis. In 1847 the villagers redeemed their freedom and land from the descendents of these families. In the 17th century the city became a major center for the manufacture of leather and footwear, described by V. I. Lenin as “a particularly noteworthy example of capitalist manufacture” (Poln. sobr. soch., 5th ed., vol. 3, p. 409). Kimry has footwear, metalworking, and garment (including knitwear) industries. It is the site of a mechanical and technological technicum and a medical school. |
