Okun’, Semen Bentsianovich

Born July 25, 1908, in the settlement of Klintsy, in what is now Briansk Oblast; died Feb. 23, 1972, in Leningrad. Soviet historian. Doctor of historical sciences (1939).

After graduating from Leningrad University in 1931, Okun’ worked in the Historical Archive. From 1938 to 1941 and from 1944 to 1972 he taught at Leningrad University, where he became a professor in 1940. From 1942 to 1944 he was a professor at the V. I. Lenin Military Political Academy. Okun’ investigated the social movement and class struggle in 18th- and 19th-century Russia, as well as the tsarist colonial policy in the Far East and the history of the art of war in the Russian Army and Navy.
