Order of the British Empire

An order of chivalry established by King George V (UK) in 1917 to honour military and civil achievements. Those who receive GBE (Knight/Dame Grand Cross) or KBE/DBE (Knight/Dame Commander) of the OBE are allowed to use the pre-nominal Sir or Dame; all can use the post-nominal (GBE, KBE, DBE, CBE, OBE, or MBE). Top-tier professors and doctors in the UK are often honoured with an Order of the British Empire for services above and beyond the call of duty.
