adenosine deaminase inhibitor adenosine deaminase inhibitor A drug that interferes with the action of the enzyme adenosine deaminase necessary for the irreversible conversion of adenosine to inosine. Failure to form inosine leads to abnormalities in purine nucleoside metabolism that are toxic to the cell concerned. This provides the opportunity to use adenosine deaminase inhibitors as anticancer drugs. The very expensive drug pentostatin (Nipent) is used to treat hairy cell leukaemia in adults. |
