It flows generally W to Grodno, then N and W through S Lithuania to form part of the Lithuania–Kaliningrad Region border before entering the Kursky Zaliv of the Baltic Sea through a small delta. Kaunas and Sovetsk are large cities along its course. The Neman is navigable c.60 mi (100 km) above Grodno. Neman

(Lithuanian, Nemunas), a river in the Byelorussian SSR and the Lithuanian SSR (partly along the border with Kaliningrad Oblast of the RSFSR). It is 937 km long and drains an area of 98,200 sq km.

Rising south of the Minsk Upland, the Neman meanders along the Neman Depression. In crossing the Baltic Ridge it forms large loops and rapids. In its lower course the river flows along the Central Lithuanian and coastal lowlands; the valley is wide, and there are islands in the channel. There are many shoals and bars along the entire length of the river. The Neman empties into the Courland Lagoon of the Baltic Sea, forming a delta. The main branches are the Gilija. (Matrosovka., left) and the Rusné, which also divides into the copious Skirvytę and the wide but shallow Atmata. (right). The Neman basin has many small lakes, which cover 2.5 percent of the basin area.

The river is fed mainly by snow; in the lower course it is fed by rain. The mean flow rate is 678 cu m per sec. There is high water in the spring from mid-March to late May; there is low water in the summer, with intermittent floods from the rainfall; such floods are more common in the fall and winter. During low water there are significant wind-induced drops in water level and surges at the mouth. In the autumn ice drifts from late November through December. The river usually freezes in December, but temporary breaking up and drifting of the ice may occur in winter. The ice breaks up in late March, sometimes in February or April.

The main tributaries are the Berezina, Merkys, Neris, Nevėžys, Dubysa, Jūra, and Minija on the right and the Shchara and Sheshupe (Lithuanian, Šešupė) on the left. There is regular navigation from Birŝtonas. The Neman is linked by the Oginskii Canal with the Dnieper and by the Augustów Canal with the Vistula. The river is used for floating timber; the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant and a reservoir are located on it. The cities of Stolbtsy, Mosty, Grodno, Druskininkai, Alytus, Prenai, Birstonas, Kaunas, Jurbarkas, Smalininkai, Neman, Sovetsk, and Rusné are on the river.
