The city has oil and natural-gas wells and processing facilities, and plants making railroad cars, oil-field equipment, trailers, and machinery. It is also a livestock center with annual horse and cattle shows. Pine lumbering was formerly important to the area. The city boomed with the discovery of the oil field in 1930. It is the seat of LeTourneau Univ.
