Mamontov, Konstantin

(pseudonym of K. K. Mamantov). Born Oct. 16 (28), 1869, in St. Petersburg; died Feb. 14, 1920, in Ekaterinodar, now Krasnodar. White cossack military commander; lieutenant general (1919).

Mamontov graduated from the Nikolai Cavalry School in 1890 and served in World War I (1914-18) as commander (colonel) of the 6th Don Cossack Regiment. In the Civil War of 1918-20 he commanded the IV Don Cavalry Corps in the counterrevolutionary armies of Generals Krasnov and Denikin. From August to September 1919, Mamontov led a White Guard cavalry raid along the rear of the Soviet troops of the Southern Front. Mamontov’s corps was routed by S. M. Budennyi’s cavalry corps at Kastornaia in November 1919. Because of this, on Dec. 2, 1919, Denikin relieved Mamontov from his command. He died of typhus.
