(me-kon'ik as'id), A compound obtained from opium; it forms soluble salts (meconates) with many of the alkaloids of opium.

meconic acid

A dicarboxylic acid found in Papaveraceae family plants (e.g., Papaver somniferum (opium poppy) and P bracteatum). It constitutes ± 5% of opium and can be used to identify opium, but does not have opiate activity itself.
