Leftist Liberty Front

(Frente Izquierda de Liberación, FIdeL), a grouping of Uruguayan left-wing parties, political groups, and prominent individuals that appeared under a single symbol on the ballot beginning in 1962 and ran on a common program. The FIdeL program was outspokenly democratic and patriotic in character. The participants in the front included the Communist Party of Uruguay, the Uruguayan Revolutionary Movement, the Batllist movement Avanzar, and a number of prominent political figures. In 1966 the front won six seats in the Chamber of Deputies and one in the Senate. In 1971, while maintaining its own organizational structure, the front joined the newly created democratic and anti-imperialist bloc, the Broad Front (Frente Amplio), which brought together considerably broader patriotic forces.
