N-acetylserotonin

N-acetylserotonin

A natural chemical intermediate in the production of melatonin from serotonin, and is produced by aralkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) and is converted to melatonin by acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT). It acts as neurotransmitter at melatonin receptors MT1, MT2 and MT3. NAS’s distribution suggests that it may not be limited in its role as a melatonin precursor.
