Nemirov Gorodishche
Nemirov Gorodishche
the largest archaeological site of Scythian times between the Dnieper and Dnestr rivers, having an area of more than 100 hectares (ha). The site, which dates back to the seventh and sixth centuries B.C., is located 4 km from the village of Nemirov, in Nemirov Raion, Vinnitsa Oblast, Ukrainian SSR.
Nemirov Gorodishche was excavated by M. I. Artamonov from 1946 to 1948. It was surrounded by an extensive earthen bank and a ditch. Only that part of Nemirov Gorodishche surrounded by the second earthen bank and ditch (about 9 ha) was inhabited. The remaining territory was used for pasturing livestock and, in time of war, for sheltering the inhabitants of nearby settlements. The inhabitants of Nemirov Gorodishche were land cultivators and stock raisers. They maintained close ties with Olbia. (Articles produced by Olbians were found at the site.) From the tenth to the 13th century there was a Slavic settlement in Nemirov Gorodishche.
