Kingston, Maxine Hong

Kingston, Maxine (Ting Ting) Hong

(1940– ) writer; born in Stockton, Calif. She studied at the University of California: Berkeley (B.A. 1962; teaching certificate 1965). She married Earll Kingston (1962), taught at a variety of high schools in Hawaii and California (1965–69), and at the college level (1970). She divided her time between Hawaii and Studio City, Calif. She often blended legend and autobiography in her nonfiction books, such as The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood among Ghosts (1976) and China Men (1980). She also wrote many stories and articles for periodicals.
