Nemuro Strait

a strait that lies between Kunashir and Hokkaido islands. It is the northern extension of Izmena Strait. In the extreme south, Nemuro Strait connects the Okhotsk Sea with the Pacific Ocean. It is 74 km long and measures 43 km wide in the north and 24 km wide in the south. The strait reaches depths of 2,500 m in the north and 17–20 m in the south. The shores are generally steep and slightly jagged. Nemuro Strait freezes over in the winter.
