Before white colonization, approximately 3,000 Mohicans lived in the Hudson Valley, farming, hunting, and gathering. In the early 17th century, the Mohicans were drawn into the fur trade, which led to disintegration of their tribal structure. Most of the Mohicans were exterminated as a result of white colonization and raids by the Iroquois. After several resettlements in the 19th century, the remaining Mohicans, approximately 300 persons, were settled on the Stock-bridge Reservation in Wisconsin, with the Munsee, who were remnants of the Delaware group; in 1965, the combined total population was approximately 600.
