Kirenga

a river in Irkutsk Oblast, RSFSR; right-bank tributary of the Lena. Length, 746 km. Basin area, 46,600 sq km. It rises in the Baikal Range and is known as the Levaia Kirenga until it joins the Pravaia Kirenga to form the Kirenga. It is fed mainly by rain. The average annual rate of flow at the village of Shorokhovo (18 km from the mouth) is 658 cu m per sec. The river freezes over in late October or early November, and the ice breaks up in late April or in May. Its major tributaries are the Ul’kan and Minia on the right and the Khanda on the left. The Kirenga is used for floating timber and is navigable as far as the village of Kazachinskoe (228 km). The city of Kirensk is located at the mouth.
