Mierevelt, Michiel Janszen van

Mierevelt, Miereveld, or Miereveldt, Michiel Janszen van

(all: mēkhēl` yän`sən vän mē`rəvĕlt), 1567–1641, Dutch portrait painter. He was court painter to the house of Orange, working chiefly in Delft and at The Hague. Mierevelt had many pupils and assistants, whose numerous, and usually inferior, works bear his name. His thousands of portraits included those of nearly all the major court figures. The Rijksmuseum and the Metropolitan Museum have examples of his works. His son and pupil, Pieter van Mierevelt, 1595–1623, painted portraits in the manner of his father. His Anatomy Lesson is in the hospital at Delft.
