Manas Mausoleum

Manas Mausoleum

a 14th-century architectural monument in Kirghizia (on the upper Talas River). It was built as the tomb of Kianiziak-khatun, the daughter of Emir Abuk, but by legend it is considered the tomb of the hero Manas. The Manas Mausoleum is an example of the brick domed mausoleum with a portal that was widespread in Middle Asia. It is square in plan, with a tent-like, ribbed roof (restored in 1969-70) over a spherical dome. The main facade is a portal with an ogee entrance arch; it has delicate ornamentation and inscriptions on carved terracotta tiles.
