an urban-type settlement in the Yakut ASSR. Located on the Viliui Plateau, 500 km northwest of the city of Mirnyi. Population, 4,900 in 1968.

Aikhal was founded in 1962 with the opening of the Aikhal diamond mine; its chief industry is diamond extraction. There is also a concentration plant and a branch of the Viliui Technicum of Power Machinery Construction. A major building and construction program includes houses, schools, and stores, which will be connected by enclosed streets and promenades.
