Size: 1,529,927 acres.
Established: Established on October 31, 1994, by the California Desert Protection Act.
Location:Easily reached via I-15 or I-40 east of Barstow, California, and west of Needles, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. Six freeway exits provide visitor access.
Facilities:Campgrounds, visitor center, trails.
Activities:Camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, auto touring, hunting, wildflower viewing, off-road driving, interpretive programs.
Special Features:The preserve protects the fragile habitat of the desert tortoise, vast open spaces, and historic mining scenes, such as the Kelso Railroad Depot (built in 1924). It is also home to the world's largest Joshua tree forest and the 600-foot-high Kelso Dunes, the third tallest dunes in North America.
