Mojo Jojo

Mojo Jojo

(pop culture)Many supervillains have battled the pint-sized, preschool superheroines the Powerpuff Girls—including the cross-dressing devil Him; Princess, the spoiled Powerpuff wannabe; the ornery hillbilly Fuzzy Lumpkins; and the Amoeba Boys, three single-celled organisms with barely one brain between them. Yet no foe has made fans go ape more than Mojo Jojo. In the origin of the Powerpuff Girls, mentioned in the animated series' (1998–2004) opener but fully disclosed in the theatrically released The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2003), Professor Utonium combines “sugar, spice, and everything nice to create the perfect little girl.” When the Professor's playful primate lab assistant Jojo accidentally spills “Chemical X” into the mix, the resulting explosion produces not one but three girls—Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles, each with superpowers—and transforms Jojo into the megalomaniacal monkey the world would soon know and fear (well, sort of) as Mojo Jojo. Instead of receiving superpowers like his “sisters,” Mojo Jojo's intellect and ego were significantly amplified. He is the master of overstatement, prone to third-person tirades: “ … there is only room enough in this world for one Mojo Jojo. One shall be the number of Mojo Jojos in the world, and the number of Mojo Jojos in the world shall be one. Two Mojo Jojos is too many, and three is right out. So the only Mojo Jojo there is room for in the world shall be me.” Lending voice to the simian supervillain was Roger L. Jackson, also known as the telephone caller in the Scream movies. The oft-beleaguered city of Townsville has routinely fallen prey to Mojo Jojo's machinations. Operating from his volcano headquarters, he has turned the populace into dogs, attacked the city with super-monkeys, and engineered the gender-bending Powerpuff Girls counterparts, the Rowdyruff Boys. On one occasion, Mojo even teamed with Him, Fuzzy, and Princess as “the Beat-Alls,” but their evil alliance was dissolved when Mojo Jojo broke rank after falling in love with Mojo Ono. His continual defeats at the Girls' tiny hands have fomented his deep hatred of the young superheroines, and Mojo Jojo will stop at almost nothing to cause their demise: “I swear that today is the day that I will develop a plan so diabolical and evil that I will crush the Powerpuff Girls. But first … I must attend to the dishes that I have soiled with the food that I have eaten.”
