Nadir Shah, Muhammad

 

Born Apr. 9, 1883, in Dehra Dun, India; died Nov. 8, 1933, in Kabul. King of Afghanistan from 1929.

Nadir Shah played a prominent role in Afghanistan’s war for independence (the third Anglo-Afghan War) in 1919. He served as war minister from 1919 to 1924 and as ambassador to France from 1924 to 1926. He retired in 1926 and remained in France. In 1929, Nadir Shah returned to his homeland, took the lead in the struggle against Bacha-i Saqao (Bacha Saqqao), and became king in October. He was assassinated.
