Kislovodsk Mountain Astronomical Station

a station of the Central Astronomical (Pulkovo) Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; a scientific research establishment located at an elevation of 2,070 m near the city of Kislovodsk. It was founded in 1948.

The station’s principal task is the regular observation and study of active processes in the sun’s photosphere, chromosphere, and corona by optical and radio methods with the aim of studying both the solar activity itself and its effects on the earth’s ionosphere, magnetosphere, troposphere, and biosphere. The station, which is the leading scientific establishment in the network of observatories of the Solar Survey of the USSR, collects, controls, and reduces to a single system the data of the entire network and prepares them for publication, disseminates information on the state of solar activity, and conducts a mutual exchange of information with similar foreign observatories. Its scientific equipment includes coronagraphs with objective diameters of 53 and 20 cm, a chromospheric-photospheric telescope, a horizontal telescope with a large spectrograph, a spectrohelio-graph, and radio telescopes for wavelengths of 2.5 and 150 cm. The station publishes the bulletin Solnechnye dannye (Solar Data) (monthly) and Catalog of Solar Activity (annually).
