The Kiso range is about 150 km long, with elevations to 2,956 m. The mountains are composed primarily of granites. The steep slopes are deeply cut by the river valleys of the Kiso and Tenryu basins. The ridges are alpine and support dense coniferous forests.

The upper course of the river is in a deep gorge, and the lower course flows through the densely populated Nobi Plain. Above the city of Inuyama are picturesque rapids. Near the mouth the Kiso forms a number of branches. It falls into Ise Bay of the Pacific Ocean several km west of Nagoya. The river is fed by snow and rain; high water is in spring and summer. The river is used for rafting timber and fishing, and it has a hydroelectric power plant. It is navigable on the plain by flat-bottomed boats.
