Lopskie Pogosty

 

the old Russian name for the territory extending from the Kem’ basin in the north to Lake Siamozero in the south (present-day Karelian ASSR) and the general name for seven pogosty (administrative units) in the Novgorod Feudal Republic (Selets, Padanskii, Rugozero, Shuezerskii, Panozero, Siamozero, and Lindozero). The indigenous peoples of the area were the Lapps, although in the 16th and 17th centuries the principal inhabitants were the Karelians. The name was used until the 18th century.
