A requirement by the UK Department of Health that certain infections, especially if blood borne, must be reported to the National Mandatory Surveillance System and actively monitored by the reporting acute hospital trust.
Infections requiring mandatory surveillance
Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (MRSA); meticillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA); Clostridium difficile or C difficile toxins A or B from any site; Escherichia coli bacteraemia.
