medical assessment unit

A short-stay unit in some UK hospitals that may be co-located with A&E (casualty), which serves to reduce patient turnaround time and meet the four-hour target (of seeing a patient within 4 hours, regardless of level of acuity). MAUs have several trolley bays and treatment rooms and the usual emergency kit, including defibrillators and resuscitation devices.
