Lehninger, Albert Lester

Born Feb. 17, 1917, in Bridgeport, Conn. American biochemist; member of the US National Academy of Sciences (1956) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1959).

Lehninger graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1940 and taught there from 1942 to 1945. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1945 to 1952. He has been a professor and head of the medical school of Johns Hopkins University since 1952. He lectured at the university in Frankfurt-am-Main in 1951 and at Cambridge University in 1951–52. Lehninger’s main works deal with the structure and function of mitochondria, oxidative phosphorylation reactions, electron transfer in the respiratory chain, and ion migration through membranes.
