Leichou

(Luichow), a peninsula in South China, in Kwantung Province, bounded by the South China Sea. It extends for 135 km from north to south and has a width of up to 70 km. The peninsula is a hilly plain (highest elevation 272 m) composed of loose sandstone and basalt lava. Savanna landscapes predominate. In the southeast there are tropical forests, in which tigers are still found, and along the coast grow mangrove forests. Agriculture is represented by tropical farming (agave, essentialoil crops, and sugarcane) and rice cultivation. Chanchiang is the major port on the peninsula.
