Kits, El’mar

Born Apr. 14 (27), 1913, in Tartu; died there Mar. 24, 1972. Soviet painter. People’s Artist of the USSR (1971).

Kits studied under A. Vabbe at the Pallas Higher Arts School in Tartu from 1935 to 1939. He taught at the art institute in Tartu from 1944 to 1949. His thematic paintings, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits are marked by a picturesque manner of execution and a subtle palette. His works include Floodtime in Valgemetsa (1960) and the triptych Music, Ballet, the Fine Arts (1961–62), which are both in the Art Museum of the Estonian SSR in Tallinn, and V. I. Lenin and The Builders (both 1969; State Prize of the Estonian SSR, 1970). Kits also did decorative monumental painting. He was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
