Mihri Hatun

Born in 1456, in Amasya; died there in 1514. Turkish poet.

The daughter of a judge, Mihri Hatun knew both Arabic and Persian. The basic themes of her poetry are love and the freedom of expression. In her diwan, a special place is held by the ghazals (over 200), which protest the code of Muslim morality and medieval customs. Her long Poem of Confession reflects Mihri Hatun’s free-thinking views and her doubts concerning divine wisdom and justice.
