Mijatev, Krsto Ivanov

 

Born Jan. 19, 1892, in Plovdiv; died Aug. 24, 1966. Bulgarian archaeologist and art historian. Member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1945).

From 1927 to 1956, Mijatev was a professor at the University of Sofia. From 1946 to 1963 he was the director of the Institute of Archaeology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Mijatev led many archaeological expeditions; he first excavated the Tsarevets site in Turnovo in 1949. His principal works dealt primarily with medieval painting and architecture.
