Leiopelmatidae

a family of toads of the suborder Amphicoela. The body measures up to 5 cm long. There are two genera— Ascaphus and Leiopelma. The former is represented by a single species, the bell toad (Ascaphus truei), which lives in the northwestern United States and Canada. The male has a short tail that serves as a copulative organ during internal fertilization. Toads of this family live in cold, swiftly flowing mountain streams. The female deposits the eggs (up to 50 eggs at a time) on the undersurface of a rock, to which the eggs are adherent. Larval development lasts from one to three years. The genus Leiopelma comprises three species, which are found in New Zealand.
