a plucked stringed instrument, identical to the helmet-shaped gusli. Until the 20th century it was widespread among the peoples of the Volga Region: it is called kusle or kesle by the Chuvash, kiusle by the Mari, kyrez or krez’ by the Udmurts, and guslia by the Tatars. The kiusle may have 17–25 or more strings. The body is 100–120 cm. long. The kiusle has a diatonic sound scale.
