medical emergency
A medical or behavioural condition, the onset of which is sudden and manifests itself by symptoms of sufficient severity, including severe pain, such that a prudent lay person could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in:(1) placing the health of the afflicted person with such a condition in serious jeopardy;
(2) serious impairment to the person’s bodily functions;
(3) serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part; or
(4) serious disfugurement.
Examples
Severe chest pain, severe or multiple injuries, severe SOB, loss of consciousness, sudden change in mental status (e.g., disorientation), severe bleeding, acute pain, conditions requiring immediate attention (e.g., acute MI, appendicitis, poisoning, convulsions).
