Lekain, Nikandr Sergeevich

 

(also, N. S. Eremeev). Born May 19 (June 1), 1907, in the village of Kuchko-Pamash, now in Morki Raion, Mari ASSR; died Feb. 15,1960, in IoshkarOla. Soviet Mari writer. People’s Writer of the Mari ASSR (1957). Member of the CPSU since 1943. Participant in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45.

Lekain wrote many short stories and sketches, as well as the novels Iron Strength (1939–41), In the Flames of the Great War (books 1–3, 1948), and Land of Our Ancestors (books 1–2, 1955–60; dedicated to the life of the Mari people from 1910 through 1945) and the children’s novellas Golden Crumb (1951) and Sounds of a Song (1955).
