Mikhail Aleksandrovich

Born 1333 in Pskov; died Aug. 26, 1399, in Tver’. Grand prince of Tver’ (1368). Son of Aleksandr Mikhailovich, grand prince of Tver’.

Mikhail Aleksandrovich took power in Tver’ in 1368. In the same year the troops of Grand Prince Dmitrii Ivanovich Donskoi of Moscow laid siege to Tver’, and Mikhail Aleksandrovich fled to Lithuania. He returned to Tver’ in 1369, but in 1370, Donskoi occupied Tver’ for the second time, and Mikhail Aleksandrovich again sought refuge in Lithuania. During the summer of 1372 he returned to Tver’ with the help of Lithuanian troops. In 1370 he fought Donskoi over the succession to the throne of the grand prince of Vladimir. Mikhail Aleksandrovich received the grand princely charter (iarlyk) from the Golden Horde in 1370–71 and in 1375. However, his struggle against the grand prince of Moscow was not successful.
