Le Maire, Jakob

 

Born 1585; died December 1616. Dutch trader and explorer.

In 1615–16, Le Maire and W. Schouten led an expedition to Indonesia. As they rounded Tierra del Fuego, Le Maire and Schouten discovered Estados Island and Cape Horn; in the Pacific Ocean they discovered several atolls and the archipelagoes of Tuamotu and Tonga, Horn Island, the eastern coast of New Ireland and five groups of islands northeast of it, and Schouten Island, near the northern coast of New Guinea; they visited the islands of Halmahera and Java. Le Maire was arrested on Java by agents of the East India Company and was sent to Holland; he died en route.
